Justices Rule for White Firefighters in Racial Bias Case

The Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 in favor of 18 white firefighters, a decision that found the city of New Haven wrongly threw out the results of a promotional exam in which minority firefighters fared poorly. The case has brought widespread attention for overturning the decision of the appeals court that Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor took part in. The decision is sure to have implications for how employers consider race in their hiring and promotions decisions but some say it establishes confusing standards.
