Public Engagement
Public Engagement

For communities dealing with contentious problems, public officials wrestling with tough policy choices or organizations faced with an apathetic or angry public, public engagement offers a means to:

Help citizens understand complex problems
Involve those who are normally excluded from policy debates
Promote productive public and leadership dialogue
Create momentum for change by building common ground, managing differences and creating new partnerships

Whether the issue is education, health care, public safety, taxes, transportation, the environment or business/community relations, Public Agenda offers a powerful set of strategies and materials for public engagement.

CENTER FOR ADVANCES IN PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

TRANSFORMING PUBLIC LIFE
Like so many old industrial cities, over the years, Bridgeport, CT has lost much of its manufacturing and industrial base. But about ten years ago, Bridgeport took a new direction and made public engagement an integral part of its community life. Our new case study shows how citizen engagement has extended beyond education, the issue around which it began, to other areas and has had an important impact on how decisions are generally made. REFRAMING "FRAMING"
Public Agenda's Will Friedman takes on framing in a new paper that provides a refreshing clarity and considerable insights. The essay, Reframing "Framing" is the first thought-piece from Public Agenda's Center for Advances in Public Engagement. Dr. Friedman, who is Executive Vice President at Public Agenda and the Director of CAPE, delineates "Framing-to-Persuade vs. Framing-for-Deliberation" and tackles honest vs. dishonest framing. IMPORTANT, BUT NOT FOR ME
Our new study explains why parents and students are so complacent about math, science and technology education, and it explores what kinds of changes might be helpful in building more interest in and support for more rigorous MST courses. Click here for more.
