Former Obama Staffer Michael Itzkowitz joins Public Agenda as Non-Resident Senior Fellow

Public Agenda, a non-partisan research to action organization, today announced the appointment of Michael Itzkowitz as a Non-Resident Senior Fellow, joining its roster of talented researchers and policy experts. With more than 10 years of experience in federal education policy, his work focuses on developing accountability metrics that produce better outcomes for postsecondary students and a more effective and efficient use of public funds.

“Michael’s expertise in the higher education space is unmatched, and we are grateful as an organization to have his talent to support our mission of building a stronger democracy,” said Andrew Seligsohn, President of Public Agenda. “Democracy is in trouble when citizens don’t see pathways to opportunity, and the higher education pathway feels more and more out of reach. Michael’s insights will help Public Agenda contribute even more to discussions of how higher education can change to meet the challenge.”

In addition to his current work with Public Agenda, Itzkowitz is Founder and President of the Higher Education Advisory Group (the HEA Group). Prior to these roles, he served as Senior Fellow at Third Way, focusing on research related to higher education. Itzkowitz was also a Presidential Appointee in the Obama Administration at the U.S. Department of Education, most notably as the Director of the Administration’s College Scorecard, an initiative focused on higher education transparency and accountability.

“Public Agenda is doing important work to shift the focus of higher education away from defending the status quo and toward ideas that are most effective for the students and taxpayers who deserve a strong return on their investment,” said Itzkowitz of his appointment. “I’m thrilled to join the team and look forward to turning research into actionable results.”

Itzkowitz holds both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Florida.
